   Résumé
   Eddie Ginley est présentateur dans un petit night-club de Liverpool. Il lit les romans de Hammett et Chandler, rêve de Bacall et Bogart. Il se résout à placer une petite annonce dans un journal pour proposer ses services de détective privé. Son premier contrat consiste à retrouver une femme. Il y arrive, mais sera passé à tabac, puis perdra son emploi au night-club. On le relance sur une autre enquête, il découvre un trafic de drogue, un réseau d'armes pour l'Afrique du Sud… Il déjoue tous les desseins, les plans, et se retrouve seul dans sa chambre, comme au début, et comme ses héros.
   Commentaire
   Même s'il s'agissait d'un hommage au film noir, Frears confronte son «privé» aux trafics de drogue, d'armes: le point de vue critique du réalisateur de My Beautiful Laundrette est déjà à l'œuvre. Et Albert Finney conserve l'accent et l'allure de la classe ouvrière anglaise, chère à Frears.
